Voice Machine is the ultimate application for redesigning the voice whether by altering the pitch by leaving the natural character untouched or by creating completely new sound files. The VM Generator allows one to work with the voice in the same way that one would use an instrument.
This means a layout for a backing choir can be created in minutes, reducing recording time to a minimum. Vocal arrangements are easily played along with the lead vocal by using the keyboard in real-time or drawing MIDI note events in any VST sequencer program. The VM Processor allows the user to either change the melody or simply correct the intonation by changing the pitch of a voice without changing the voices original character. There are independent controls for the pitch shift and character profile.
These could be used independently for natural pitch shifting or used interactively to create a range of effects such as simulating other singing voices, and even imprinting the character of the male voice onto a female vocalist.

It allows you to have some fun and interesting effects, but still lets you hear the vocal clearly. It can also solve common problems with live vocals. Applying effects to vocals in a live setting is a tricky thing. There are some tough factors to contend with. The biggest enemy is often feedback.
You are singing into the mic, while the music is playing, but your microphone is not just picking up your voice.
It also hears the music, the music travels out of the speakers into the microphone, which goes back into the speakers, which comes back into your microphone. Next thing you know there's that high pitch screech of feedback and everyone is covering their ears. No good. The vocal FX rack I've created should help mitigate that problem. It has a gate, whose threshold should be set high enough to close out the background music, but low enough to still pick up your vocals.
There's also an EQ which can also be a huge help in killing feedback. There are some cool effects in this rack too. I've set up the most commonly needed knobs in the main rack, and within the rack there are more macro knobs to help you fine tune everything. It a nutshell, it has Delay, Chorus, a Reverb with a filter, Beat Repeat for some fun pitch mangling delays, a Radio voice, and a delay for single words.
I make a lot of use of multiple chains on this effect rack. The delay, for instance is broken into two chains, one with the delay and one that lets the dry signal through.
The delay also features a sidechained compressor, so it ducks down while you are singing and then rises up when you stop. This allows you to use heavy delays without washing out the voice and losing clarity.Recording vocals almost always requires the most attention to detail in regards to performance and sound. Production Tips. Most podcasters and info spreaders are quick to talk about the gear they recommend — me included — for getting great audio. You probably recognize the 3-band interface of the Air Kill EQ.
When you turn up one of these knobs — also called pots which is short for potentiometer… the more you know — you increase that specific sound. When you turn the knob down it also turns down that sound… simple enough, right? So if you want less low frequency in your sound you are able to lower it by turning down the low knob.
If you want more clarity you are able to turn up the high knob. When using this type of EQ you are able to grab a specific point and drag it around the frequency spectrum. This allows you to select a specific frequency you want to manipulate. More often than not, I will use a parametric equalizer because I love the visual representation and the extra precision. If the audio is quieter than the set threshold, the gate remains closed preventing any audio from passing.
This is the 1 tool I rely on for cleaning up audio when producing voiceover. Why does that matter? Have you ever watched a movie where all of the sudden the music comes in and you struggle to hear the dialogue? By keeping your audio in a tight pocket you enable your listener to hear your voice at all times whether you speak softly or are shouting.
Speaking of shouting, the compressor also helps prevent audio from reaching 0 dB and peaking. In this case, the threshold determines when to start compressing the audio. In the picture above, the ratio is 3. That means for every 3 decibels dB that the audio goes over the threshold, only 1 decibel will actually pass.
Pretty neat, right! This is used to tighten up your dynamics even moreand can really sound like crap if you overdo it. This is definitely a process that shows its price tag. Note: Audacity calls their limiter a leveler. When it comes to vocal processing, one of the most interesting effects you can use is any kind of vocoder VST plugin. Simply put, a vocoder is a device that is used to synthesize the human voice. This has the effect of making vocals sound robotic and inhuman.
It can be the perfect way to add some flare to a dull performance. While vocoders are best known for making robots sing, there are plenty of other ways you can make use of them in your productions. For bass music producers, they can be a great way to add vowel sounds to your bass patches.
You can even use them to create experimental sounds like tuned percussion, or you can add otherworldly textures to any piece of audio. There are a lot of vocoder VST plugins floating around the internet, but it can be tough to figure out which ones are worth using.
How Vocoders Work A vocoder consists of two main elements: the carrier and the modulator. The modulator can be any audio source, though the most popular choice is to use a vocal. The carrier is the synthesized element of the vocoder. The modulator is run through a series of filter bands that are used to create an amplitude mapping of its most important characteristics. The higher the number of filter bands, the more detailed the carrier will sound.
This map is then used to remove all the unwanted frequencies from the carrier, resulting in a seamless mixture of the two sounds.Manipulator - Showcase - A new kind of vocal transforming processor
To put that in simpler terms, we can compare this process to sketching over a penny onto a piece of paper. In this metaphor, the penny is the modulator, the paper is the carrier, and the pencil is the filter band. The resulting sketch retains the image of the penny but transfers its material from copper to paper. Best Commercial Vocoder VST Plugins If you are serious about using vocoders in your workflow, your best bet is to go with a commercial plugin.
As with any other piece of gear, you get what you pay for. Luckily, there are lots of great options on the market and not all of them will break the bank! You also get a number of carrier options to choose from and a few other basic functions. Some would include an envelope follower and controls for the filter bands. True to its name, the vocoder panel can be used to create classic robotic voice effects. You can choose from a variety of different vocoder modes to use, ranging from vintage hardware sounds to more modern digital ones.
Similarly, the talkbox panel emulates the iconic sound of the talkbox.

A talkbox is similar to a vocoder, but has its own unique sound. The polyvox section can be used to create rich vocal harmonies using a polyphonic pitch shifter. This tool can produce a range of effects, from organic backing vocals to artificial sounds.
Lastly, the compuvox panel can be used to add a computerized quality to your sounds.
